DAY 1. Bouganvillea Hotel. Alajuela. Great Gardens and good birds only 45-minute drive from Airport. Ideal place to start the trip.
DAY 2-3: Savegre Hotel. San Gerardo de Dota. Best place in Costa Rica to find one of the most beautiful birds of the world: Resplendent Quetzal. This region holds many exclusive birds found only Costa Rica and Panama (Nearly endemic). A great variety of Hummingbirds. The lodge owns amazing grounds surrounded by local orchards, Savegre river and Oak cloud Forest. Elevation 7000 feet approx. The highest stop during the journey. Bring your sweater!
DAY 4-5 Rancho Naturalista: One of the most famous birding lodges in Costa Rica, located along the eastern side of the Central Volcanic Range. Surrounded by middle elevation forest, coffee, sugar cane fields, rivers and the Turrialba Volcano, this region has it all. Rich diversity of habitats makes this region one of the best bird spots in Costa Rica. The famous snowcap hummingbird, sunbittern, tanagers, chachalacas, toucans and many more species are found here. Great family atmosphere and delicious cuisine
DAY 6-7 Ara Ambigua Lodge. Sarapiqui. Low land rain forest. Hot and humid land only about 200 feet above sea level. Sarpiquí is home of critical endangered Great green Macaw, uncommon species as Snowy Cotinga, tinamous, motmots and several other species are here. La Selva biological station is based in this region, considered one of the most important research stations in tropical America. More then half of the total bird species of Costa Rica have been found along the county. Sarapiqui holds bird species from the Caribbean lowlands, middle elevations and the north of the country. Rivers, tropical wet forest, middle elevation forest and grasslands turns this area a mandatory stop.
DAY 8-9 Arenal volcano. Observatory Lodge. One of the best birding lodges in Costa Rica. beautiful hotel gardens, waterfalls, creeks and easy trails to hike. Bordered by lake and Arenal volcano, this location owns over 870 acres. Low land and middle elevation species converge here. One of the iconic birds here is the Great Curassow.
DAY 11: Buena Vista Chic Hotel: Surrounded by coffee fields and great views over Alajuela city. This is a great lodge to end our journey, located only 30 minutes’ drive from international airport Juan Santa Maria.
