toro amarillo waterfall and hummingbirds
Out of the common birding locations where few foreigners adventure is Toro Amarillo, middle elevation land surrounded by cloud forest, waterfalls and hummingbirds.
The area is well known by local tourists interested on steep walks to see waterfalls, but these waterfalls are impresive not only by their height but also the turquoise colors given by elements like sulphur coming from Viejo and Poás volcanoes.
Some of the well known hotels here are: El Silencio lodge, and Bosque de Paz.
Yes they have oustanding waterfalls but also another reason for me to come here is to see or hopefully photograph Solitary Eagle. One of the few raptors in Costa Rica with no photos. Some other top birds here really hard to see or to hear are; black banded Woodcreeper , strong billed Woodcreeper, black eared wood quail, highland tinamou, among others. At leas in this trip I had the reward to photograph 2 hummingbirds, endemic to Costa Rica and Panama
