Why not Caribbean Coast ?

Costa Rica has 4 major birding zones:

1. Talamanca Mountain range. High elevations
2. North East. Sarapiquí, Arenal, Caño Negro, Turrialba
3. Central Pacific. Tárcoles, Carara, Ensenada, Chomes
4. South Pacific. Osa Península, Corcovado, Jiménez, San Vito.

 

But why Caribbean Coast is not listed on regular birding sites of Costa Rica?

Despite the beautiful coast line, sloths, monkeys, the second most important side for Green Sea turtles to nest on the western Hemisphere: Tortuguero, Afro Caribbean life stile. There is a simple fact: «many of the sps that occur in Sarapiqui and Turrialba regions » are similar to the sps of Caribbean Low Lands, in fact the combination of these two areas will increase a lot the diversity of species more than the coast.

Of course there will be always targets that remain with best chances at some special spots near the coast (Spot crowned Ant Vireo, Black chested Jay, Great Jacamar, and some reduced options for Speckled Mourner or Black crowned Antpitta.)

Caribbean coast line has amazing sites like Tortuguero, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo Limon, outstanding nature and wild life, but if your visit is based for a birding trip we rather to go Turrialba and Sarapiquí to get most of the bird diversity from the east of Costa Rica.
